I've never been an early adopter; as a business and technology consultant, I've seen way too many cases of "the leading edge" being "the bleeding edge" of technology because early adopters pay the most for the privilege of having the most go wrong with under-tested, under-appointed, buggy products. So when the Amazon Kindle came out, my reaction was the typical, "Yeah, we'll see."
Well, we're seeing. They've figured out that Wi-fi and USB are great, that e-Ink needed some tweaking and color, and the rest of the world has been making mobile e-books like there's no tomorrow. It's now a mature product that works rather well, and I've taken a liking to the format after downloading the Kindle app onto my Android smartphone.
PDF is a pretty versatile format, but while pervasive, is not ubiquitous; some e-book readers and smartphones don't support it particularly well, mainly because it's made to give you an electronic representation of printed matter, which is generally printed on 8.5"x11" or A4 paper, both of which are MUCH larger than the 4" screen on an Android phone and even larger compared to phones like my old Nokia N97; the amount of scrolling to read a single page was enough to cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
Not so with .MOBI and the other e-reader formats. They reflow the text to the screen margins and do a good job of scaling and zooming graphics, provide automatic bookmarking, choice of font size and color, and as free markets often do, the decision for the product and platform to flourish has been made, with gusto I might add.
So over the next week or two I'll be doing an update of my book and some free reports, and after posting updated versions of the PDFs, I'll be creating Kindle-compatible versions for the Amazon Marketplace. Pricing will not change -- it hasn't changed since 2002 when I started this.
I'm sure there will be some who have purchased the PDF version who will want the MOBI version as well, and one of the things on my to-do list is to try to work out some sort of coupon code with Amazon so that if you forward me the receipt you were e-mailed when you purchased the PDF, I can send you the coupon code to get the MOBI version at no charge, or for a few cents if they have some limitation on coupons that requires a nominal purchase. As you've seen, I don't need to gouge anybody to keep going.
So stay tuned, and as always, if you have suggestions, please note them in the suggestion box forum.
